Peeing My Pants in the Performance of My Duties: Service Culture and Innovation Culture

Carl Niedner
Coelo Company of Design

Carl is a founding member of Coelo Company of Design, a Corvallis-based software consultancy with expertise in
manufacturing, healthcare and public safety. He has been a software engineer since 1983, and a volunteer
firefighter since 1979.

I've spent my career so far with one foot in the world of public service, and the other in the world of innovation.

I've hurt myself, humiliated myself and peed my pants in the performance of my duties -- and more often in the
performance of my geek duties!

What motivates us to serve? What motivates us to innovate? What can the two cultures learn from one another?
Are there parallels that offer hope in the current matter of the 99% and the 1%?
